in January i was...

In January of earlier this year I was on my way to Columbia, South Carolina to race in the final State Cross Country meet of my high school career. Cross Country is a sport in which teams from different high schools in the same region compete in a race that is 3.1 miles long(also known as a 5k). The state meet is where the best of the best go and compete in the last High school race of the year. Now Cross Country was my favorite sport and i had been working so hard for three years(goin on my fourth) to break my school record, which was a time of 17:53(17 min. 53 sec) made by a graduate of Crescent High School in 2009. Right before the race was about to start i began to get nervous as thoughts started to appear inside my head, " what if i do not do good after all the effort i have put into this", and so on and so on.

As I stepped on the line my heart began to pound, i was ready at last. the gun was fired and everyone was off to the races! I started out not doing as well as i wanted because i was in the middle of the pack. So i pushed myself to pick up the pace and catch up with the front. i kept telling myself, this is your last chance, how bad do you really want it? Finally i was down to my last mile, by this time i was gased but i had not given up. I felt as if i was going to pass out by this point. I looked up and could see the finish line, only two hundred yards to the finish. I aslo could see the timer above the finish line as it seemed like it was increasing at a rapid pase: 17:05, 17:06, 17:07. Right here is where it all came down to, this is where all my hard work had to pay off. I sprinted the last 150 yards and did not look back. I crossed the finished line, caught my breath, and took a hugh sign of relief. I had broken the school record by the skin of my teeth, with a time of 17:45! Words can not describe the excitment and joy that i felt for the rest of that day, or even that week. I was glad that all the hard work did pay off in the end.
